What makes the teeth the colour we see is quite complex and in this piece we try and make some sense of why the teeth will only go a certain colour after a teeth whitening treatments.
Ok so you are looking in the mirror and your teeth look discoloured and darker than they used to be and you then start to research teeth whitening but you are unsure what system to opt for.
The key to how white the teeth will go will typically depend on whether what you see is actually staining or the natural colouration of the dentin. This dentin is the main structure of the tooth which the blood vessels and nerves etc reside and if you was born with a yellowing coloured dentin. If this is the case your teeth will always had a darker colour compared to people of the same age. Now with lifestyle and aging the teeth will also get stained but remembering the colour when you was younger will help you understand the likely output after whitening.
Teeth whitening is a process of whitening the enamel and does not travel that deep in to the dentin to change the colour that fundamentally. So if you have dark coloured dentin and after whitening they are not as bright as you was hoping then might be worth looking at veneers, which will cover the surface of the tooth and you can select a white colour.
Luckily most of us will end up with a much brighter smile after whitening as the day to day staining caused by drinking tea, coffee, red wine and much more will darken the teeth over a long period of time, maybe ten to fifteen years.
The staining changes the colour of the teeth as the enamel gets penetrated and each tooth will have thousands of micro-pores and teeth whitening will release the staining and revitalise the teeth’s colour. One of the popular methods is laser teeth whitening as this works very well.
The laser sometimes is over stated as people expect as huge laser light zapping at the teeth but in reality the laser is a series of LED lights which emit a light and heat which oxydises the peroxide gel and allows the teeth whitening process to work much quicker and will whiten the teeth in just one hour.
Teeth whitening will always brighten the teeth but you will need to keep your expectations open as the end result will depend on the above factors. A brightening of the smile is still worth the investment in time and money so go for it and give it a go!
If your teeth go really white then you will need to keep working the whitening to maintain the smile as the teeth will never stay white as the staining will take effect and ensure you maintain good overall dental health care as whiter teeth is no substitute for healthy teeth and gums. So good luck!
